Baja SAE team lead

SAIT, 2013-2014

Baja SAE is a student competition similar to Formula SAE. Students are tasked to construct and compete in a small off-road vehicle. I was a member of SAIT’s inaugural Baja SAE team in 2012-2013. The 2012-2013 team produced a partially-completed vehicle frame and collected many of the required components, but the project was still in its infancy when I took leadership of the team for 2013-2014.

Actions:

My role as team leader included:

  • Interviewing, selecting, and managing team members
  • Liaising with SAIT faculty and SAE event officials
  • Ensuring compliance with the SAE Baja rulebook
  • Budgeting and scheduling
  • Securing sponsorship and grant funding

In addition to overall project management, I also led the suspension, vehicle dynamics, and fabrication project components.

Results:

Our team of talented students saw the project to completion. The 2014 team took the vehicle to competition in Pittsburg, Kansas and succeeded in placing 14th in dynamic events, besting 77 experienced teams from other schools. We took home the 2nd place trophy for the sled pull event.
